The Nervous patient.

Few people enjoy visiting the dentist, but some anticipate the occasion with a great apprehension, perhaps suffering sleepless nights. Very few cannot even enter the surgery, even though they have dental pain that can easily be treated. This fear may stem from a painful experience in the past, a dislike of the drill noise or injections, or sometimes just a feeling of guilt that they haven't been for a long time.

Dentists are used to dealing with nervous patients and it is quite helpful to mention before an appointment that you are particularly anxious. It is unlikely that treatment will be carried out at the first visit, and most patients are less nervous at subsequent appointments, when they have met the staff and familiarised themselves with the sights, smells and sounds of the dental practice.

Pain is well controlled in modem dentistry. The needles for the injections are very fine although the holders look big! Often, the gum can be numbed with a cream or spray before the injection, and the anaesthetic solution is warmed to body temperature so that there is less sensation from it. If the patient wants the dentist to stop, because of discomfort or for a rest, they can make a hand signal to the dentist.

The noise can be off-putting, even though modem drills are quieter. A personal stereo, to listen to while the work is carried out, is quite acceptable and very relaxing.

Extremely nervous patients may be given a mild sedative to help them sleep the night before an appointment. A period of familiarisation may be prescribed during which the amount of treatment given at an appointment is gradually increased as the patient gains confidence. Regular check ups are important for apprehensive patients, not only to diagnose disease before it becomes major, but also to maintain familiarity with the dental practice.

Dental disease can be prevented by avoiding sweet food and drink between meals, and by brushing your teeth really well with a fluoride toothpaste last thing at night.
