Your New Denture
New dentures often feel bulky and
loose for a period after they have been fitted. When the muscles of your mouth
have learned to control them you will find that you become less aware of your
denture during most activities. To help you adapt quickly:
1. Eat soft foods for the first few
days until your confidence increases.
2. Dentures should normally be left
out at night but it may help to wear them while' you sleep during the
acclimatisation period.
3. If areas of rubbing occur return
to the dentist for easing. Leaving the denture in for a few hours before the
appointment helps him to see the sore area and ease the correct spot.
Cleaning Your Dentures
1. Rinse your denture under a tap
after meals when possible.
2. Brush your denture thoroughly
every evening using a denture brush or nailbrush and soap.
3. Proprietary denture cleaners may
be used if stains develop but do not use them with very hot water as they can
bleach the pink plastic. .
4. Leave the denture out at night
(unless otherwise instructed by your dentist) as this gives your tissues a
chance to rest. Denture plastic should not be allowed to dry out as it may warp
so keep it in water.
5. If you have some of your own
teeth brush particularly well where the denture lies over them as food can
stagnate there and your saliva does not wash the area freely.
General
The tissues on which your denture
rest change shape, particularly after recent extractions and the denture may
need to be adapted or replaced. Regular check-ups will monitor this.
A high standard of cleanliness of
the denture and natural teeth, and resting the tissues, by leaving the denture
out at night, will minimise any further damage to your mouth.
It is quite important to attend
regularly every 6 months for an examination if you have any remaining teeth to
be checked and for your denture to be reviewed. If you are wearing full dentures
it is advisable to attend every 6 or 12 months for an examination to check the
dentures and gums routinely for any abnormal conditions that may arise. There
will be a charge for the check up.
Great care must be taken with the
acrylic dentures as they are made of plastic and will break or crack quite
easily, especially if dropped. If the denture should break bring it to the
surgery for a repair.
It is advisable to consider having
a spare set of dentures made.
